UGA Opera Theatre Student Spotlight
Joseph Michael Brent
Hometown: New York City
UGA program/major: DMA - Vocal Performance
Year in school: 3rd Year DMA (5th year graduate work)
What is your earliest musical memory? Singing in Elementary School shows.
Does anybody else in your family work in music related business? Not professionally.
Do you play any other musical instrument? I have an undergraduate and master degree in Double Bass
Do you have any experience, as an audience member, that influenced you as a musician? Nearly every single moment that I am witness to a musical event I feel some type of influence. Each moment music is made there is beauty to be observed be it technical, musical, theatrical or emotional.
When did you start considering vocal performance? In the spring of 2010 when I was in the second semester of my master's degree.
What do you consider as a milestone in your performance career? Every role feels like a milestone. Each character has unique challenges both vocally and dramatically. Each recital feels like a milestone for the same reasons.
What was your favorite scene in past UGA Opera Theatre productions? I can't choose, the entire opera of La Boheme at UGA.
What is your favorite scene in the next UGA Opera Theatre production? Act II of Carmen, the Seguidilla and Jose's aria.
Do you have any hobby? I love to read, cook, dance, have fun, learn and study languages.
If you could be or do anything else – what would it be? Though I could physically execute many jobs well, singing is the only profession that I could pursue. Anything else wouldn't compliment me.
If you could go back in time, when and where would you like to live? I think that I am living in the greatest time to be alive. Maybe the 50s - 80s would have been a easier time to be a professional singer with the greater numbers of opera houses.
If you could have dinner with five famous people from history, who would they be? Schubert, Mario Lanza, Dean Martin, Jesus Christ, Van Gogh
What is your dream opera role? Which ever role I am singing is my dream role.
Your career goals: I would like to make a career as a soloist in the opera field. I would like to be employed enough to sustain my life without the need for a "day job" or second career: if that brings me to the MET or La Scala so be it.
Is there any interesting opera backstage story you would like to share? Those stories will be published in my memoir.
What one word would you use to describe yourself? Loving.
